Week 3, a whole different dynamic

Last  week at Blocks PAper Scissors we were full of boys. Lots of sword play, airplanes, large sculpture and marble runs. This week is different. We have many young lady artists. These girls love to work together and create drawings about their families, animals and small personal sculptures.

As with any art program that focuses on children and their ideas, the work is fantastically individual.

Aidens' Marble Bounce

Taking cues from his friends Aiden experimented with bouncing a marble to begin his marble run.

Sean's New Invention

Block building center at BPS is always busy. Sean and some of his colleagues demonstrate a new marble run design.

The hard work of art.

Yesterday I got home and was exhausted and I thought how hard kids work when they make art. Not just physically but mentally.  With all the switching between centers and ideas, these children are tired and worn out by the end of class.

Wild and Crazy

Today was wild and crazy day at camp. Many of the boys (and girls) decided to don their Roman shields and grab their swords for a little play. It's hard to say no when they are so into what they're doing.
We met some new campers today who brought with them a lot of new ideas to share with the class.
Ethan is a huge wrestling fan and by the look of this video so are some of the others.

This camper has created a car track lined with all kinds of plants: flowers, trees and cactus and even has an Egyptian pyramid

The art of discovery

One of the benefits of the student-centered approach to art education is discovery. When kids work with their ideas, they create their own problems to solve. The act of figuring out, experimenting and finally solving problems creates ownership.
These girls wanted to have a loop in their marble run but needed more speed in their marble. Solution? Raise the run up in order to gain speed.

Chase and Sophia's drawing project

Chase and Sophia have created a wonderful collection of fantasy animal characters. Listening to Chase describe the characters is always a wonderful experience!

Kinetic Artists!

Fabulous 30 ft marble run created this morning at our first day of camp!

New beginnings

Today we started year three with 17 campers. There are many familiar faces and some new friends. The kids jumped right in with familiar activities such as creating awesome marble runs, puppets and drawing. Some even started weaving with CD's!

It's a great start to a great camp. I can't wait to see what these kids can come up with.
